Pennsylvania State Police are targeting personal vehicles of volunteer firefighters along with career and volunteer fire chief’s vehicles. Troopers in Western Pennsylvania are focusing on emergency lights illegally mounted on the interior of fire vehicles. According to current law all emergency lighting must be on the outside of the vehicle. Police are concerned that interior emergency lighting makes the vehicles appear to be unmarked police cars. The crackdown means some light packages on current command vehicles will have to be redesigned. One state legislator is looking at proposing a bill that would change the law, which he says is years behind modern emergency vehicle lighting standards. Paul Van Osdol, WTAE-TV: In the past few months, state police say they’ve issued 25 warnings to Western Pennsylvania firefighters for using illegal lights. “It almost looks like you’re lighting it up for Christmas,” Trooper Robin Mungo said. “We’re noticing these vehicles, and we’re taking action by issuing a written warning to let them know, ‘Let’s get this right,’ so no one is endangered.” Mungo says the concern is that the interior lights can make firefighters look like undercover police. “I’m not saying the volunteer firefighters are attempting to impersonate a police officer, but it’s the perception the general public has,” Mungo said. “They don’t know the difference, and it could be a dangerous situation.” SHARE FacebookTwitterPrevious articleNews report: Toledo chief misused smoke alarm fundNext articleRaw video: Man dead in burning vehicle inside garage of vacant Long Island home was convicted pot growerdave statterSign Up for S911 UpdatesAdd your email address for daily updates of the top stories on Statter911.comTHE LATESTTwo DC firefighters fail to notice patient had been shotFeb 5, 2016 Caught on video: Lightning hits plane on final approachFeb 4, 2016Video: Fire destroys Blakeslee Inn & Restaurant in the PoconosFeb 4, 2016Early video of high school fire in Los AngelesFeb 4, 2016Video: 20 vehicles burn & power lines burn at auto auction in New JerseyFeb 4, 2016 Powered by the First Arriving Network Contact DaveAdvertise / Marketing OpportunitiesPOPULAR POSTSThe Gregory Brothers latest: ‘Not Today (The Building is on Fire)’Jan 12, 2016 Must see: Woman solves arson on live TV & even gives...Jul 23, 2015 Complaint against cop by members of Dekalb County FD backfires after...Jan 16, 2016 POPULAR CATEGORIESVideos4883News3709EMS Topics3276Fireground Audio653Social Media & Reputation Mgmt569Fires445Must See399Funding & Staffing328MORE STORIES
